Some stress is healthy and
helpful in our lives. Stress adds challenge, excitement, and opportunity
to life, but prolonged or extremely frustrating stress can become harmful.
Long term stress can weaken the body's immune system and cause physical and
emotional illnesses.
The study of the mind/body
connection is called PNI or Psychoneuroimmunology. This approach considers our
thoughts and emotions - the mind - as having a central impact on the body's
health.
I believe in a totally,
thorough approach to health care. I integrate
my therapeutic services with the referring health care provider's treatment
plan. My programs include the following:
-Instruction, motivation, and encouragement
-Discussion of diet, lifestyle, time management, social support systems
and exercise
-Training to teach the effects of positive and negative stress
-Integration of skills learned in the office with the patient's lifestyle
Biofeedback uses electronic
instruments to measure biological signals from the body such as muscle tension,
blood pressure, breathing, heart rate, and brain wave activity. This information
is then "fed back" to the person in visual and auditory form.
Neurofeedback is like weight
training for the brain. With Neurofeedback, you learn to exercise the
neural pathways to build up your brain so that you can concentrate better.
Sensors are placed on the scalp and record brain wave frequencies. Change
in the brain wave patterns show whether the person is paying attention or tense.
In Neurofeedback training, the computer converts the brain waves into game like
displays. The colorful displays are paired with sounds to give auditory
feedback as well. The persons attentiveness controls what happens on the
screen. The patient can play the game and score points only by controlling
their level of concentration. Neurofeedback
allows the person with ADD and ADHD to learn what concentration feels
like, much like the feedback from the brain's balance system that allows the
child learning to ride a bicycle and discover how to keep his balance.
In addition to
Biofeedback and Neurofeedback, and depending on the patient's particular
problems, I teach the following therapeutic techniques:
Autogenics
Meditation
Guided Imagery
Feldenkrais
Self Talk |
Progressive Relaxation
EMDR - eye movement desensitization and reprocessing
Open Focus/Focus Training
Diaphragmatic Breathing
Reframing & Thought Stopping |

EEG training requires 40
sessions for attention, learning, and behavior problem in
order for consolidation of learning to take place. Biofeedback for
Stress/Pain Management are short-lived, goal directed and emphasize empowering
the patient to maintain control of his disorder independently. I have seen
dramatic improvements in patient health in just 5 to 8 visits. Office
visits usually last one hour.
Please call my office if you
have any other questions. If you are a health care
professional, I will gladly discuss the advisability of referring a patient.
If you are a patient, I will be happy to explain my treatment programs, my
training or any questions you might have about how I can help you with your
specific problem.
